Katie Battison Horsemanship Award

The NEEC Junior Horsemanship Class, sponsored by Dana Hall School, is open to all junior exhibitors competing in the New England Horsemen’s Council Hunt Seat Medal Final. This unique three-part class is intended to identify, from among our many competitors, the all-around horse-persons; those who can “do it all.” Young horsemen who not only ride well, but understand the great importance of quality horse care.

The top ribbon winners will be determined by adding together scores in the three competition areas; a written test, with approximately 12 top scorers moving on to a “hands on” practicum in the stable area officiated by two judges, and average first round scores in the New England Finals.

The written test will take place on Friday during the show, in the Coliseum. Finalists who move on to the practicum on Saturday will be announced at the Junior Celebration on Friday night (and on social media). All practicum finalists should dress in appropriate show or groom attire and provide a normal size groom box/bag that they would take to the ring. Helmets are optional.

First place awards will be given to the highest score for the written test, practicum, and first round New England Finals.

The overall winner is presented with the Katie Battison Horsemanship Award, a beautiful fine art print to which their name will be added alongside previous winners. The prestigious award is in honor of Katie Battison, a young rider who died tragically at the age of 17 on her way to a horse show.

Dr. Laura Faulkner, Veterinarian of the U.S. Olympic Dressage Team, 2002 winner of the Katie Battison Horsemanship Award, and 2024 NEEC Horsemanship Judge
